Almost a generation before the current spate of post-apocalyptic fiction (and completely free of zombies!), Frederik Pohl wrote this tale in 1958-- anticipating not merely an entire sub-genre of science fiction but the actual scientific "innovation" of nuclear bombs designed to kill people but leave property relatively intact and non-radioactive, last heard of, I believe, in the mid-1980s.This story's three protagonists were enlisted sailors on a deployed submarine when the bombs went off, and were simply discharged into what was left of America after the sub returned to port. Two of the three are recognizable as Navy vets-- the third much less so, as Navy surgeons preserved his brain in a steel container following his being seriously injured. Arthur, the sailor reduced to a brain in a can, is quite conscious and capable, when attached to an electric typewriter (this was written before computers), of communicating. Like a sailor-- there's nothing mechanical about him, other than his 'body'.
The story involves an unlikely plot, a major in the Air Force Reserves (who runs the City of New York, population 15,000), a pretty girl (of course), and an enormous and luxurious ocean liner. What's not to like?

A futuristic story of life after the 'Apocalypse. A the story develops the three heroes are survivors because they were on a sub underwater when the bombs fell on land. They holed up for a while, about ten (10) years. One of them is a prosthetic man, meaning a fellow who had an accident and was hooked up to a machine that kept the brain alive, outside the body. The prosthetic man's name was Arthur.
You are never sure of who is good or bad in this story until the end, but in the end you see the whole plan was to get Arthur a boat of his own.
Don't be mislead by the title This story is not about Camelot. It's about a disembodied brain.
If your highwatermark for bodyless brain stories is films like Hitler's Brain or Brain That Wouldn't Die, you're in for a treat. If, on the other hand, you are used to stories about starships operated by surgically extracted nervous systems, you'll find nothing new here.
For me, the big thing that simply doesn't work is the lust to acquire the brain in a world that is rapidly descending into low-tech-only.
There are some interesting shades of Dr. Strangelove here, what with repopulating a nuclear wasteland, but the story is so unremarkable that in the month since I read it I forgot what it was about. I had to page through it again as a refresher before I wrote this review.
Not a bad read, but I really don't recommend it unless you're studying up on Pohl.
Fun piece and an excellent example of sci fi from this time period. It was fun to read and made me think how different the future was than imagined at that time. I love the scene outside of Macy's.
If you have not previously read this, or even if you have, but it was long ago, it's an enjoyable read from the early pulp days of science fiction. A little niave and simple, but it's a good example of a writer who later became one of the all time greats in one of his very first stories.
Some years after a nuclear war civilization survives in a few sparsely populated cites; the character of the title is a brain without a body coveted by the administrators of New York City to run a power station and free dozens of laborers for other work.
Little trace of the wry wit of later Pohl can be discerned in this little tale. It's a nice read but was obviously written very long before Pohl had developed his style.
This lo-ong short story is so funny I had trouble putting it down. Fast paced, and an "I don't take myself too seriously" attitude. Loved it.
This book is definitely worth reading especially if you like classic science fiction authors. What would you do if you were there? I wonder.
